Whether you’re an experienced fisherman, a novice fisherman, or someone who simply likes being out on the water, private charters in Kailua-Kona, HI are an amazing experience no matter what you are looking for. Contrary to what some may assume, just because you aren’t a fisherman doesn’t mean you aren’t able to go out on a private charter.
While private charters are typically reserved for those that love to fish, it’s been becoming more of an occurrence that while on these charters, there are numerous whale sightings, making it a fun experience for the whole family.
Why choose a private charter?
While larger boats and tours are wonderful for being out in the open water, enjoying the vast brilliance of the ocean—embarking on a private charter gives you and your friends or family the up close and personal experience of being secluded out on the ocean surf.
When you’re on those larger tours it can be difficult to find a good spot to stand, or it can be frustrating to be amongst so many talking and excited guests. Private charters in Kailua-Kona, HI avoid that chaos and let you experience the tour on your terms.
Types of whales that can be seen
Private charters are offered in order to take guests on their own private boat out into the beautiful blue water of Kona, which has been no stranger to the whale’s that reside there year round. What types of whales can you typically see on one of our private charters? While it’s never a guarantee that the whales will be out and wanting attention, here are some of the species that we have seen:
Pilot whales. Pilot whales are the species that are more commonly seen in these waters. They can average a hearty 14’-17’ long and be seen in groups of up to 50 or more! It seems like these whales are pretty comfortable around boats and it’s happened where they’ve spent an hour or more swimming alongside the charter.
Goose Beaked or Curvier’s Beaked whales. This breed of whale doesn’t typically swim in as large of a group as the pilot whales do, so it’s common to see this species swim along with the pilot whales.
Oceanic white tip shark. While it’s obvious that this isn’t a whale, it’s a common occurrence that we see an oceanic white tip mixed in with the whales and it always makes for an exciting surprise when looking out into the water.
Humpback whales. Although this species is endangered, we have been lucky enough to have seen their numbers increase and make more appearances while we are out on our charters. These majestic creatures can reach nearly 45’ long and can weigh over a ton per foot.
So the next time you are looking for something fun and exciting to do with your significant other, a group of friends, or your whole family, give private charters in Kailua-Kona, HI a try!
