The Current State of Kilauea Volcano

If you’re concerned about the status of Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano, and the way that it may impact your upcoming travel plans, you’re not alone. The volcano’s ongoing eruption has forced evacuations and caused many travelers to cancel or reconsider their travel plans.

Fortunately, it appears that the seismic activity at Kilauea is stabilizing, and the ongoing emissions of lava and sulfur dioxide are slowing down. Additionally, the area affected by the eruption is relatively small, and shouldn’t cause anyone to reconsider their travel plans to the Hawaiian Archipelago.

In late August, the primary exposed lava pond crusted over, indicating a lapse in seismic activity. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park plans to reopen in late September, as long as activity at Kilauea continues to wind down.

It’s also important to note that the area most affected by the eruption of the Kilauea Volcano is a small area of just one island—in fact, the area directly impacted by the eruption is just 10 square miles! Most activities in the state, including charter fishing in Hawaii, are still occurring as usual.

It’s more than safe enough to travel to Hawaii, even as the Kilauea eruption continues to wind down. Here are just some of the most popular tourist activities to consider engaging in on your visit to the Hawaiian Islands:

  • Take a helicopter tour: Hawaii is revered throughout the globe for its jaw-dropping scenery. The best way to truly appreciate the scale and grandeur of Hawaii’s beautiful topography, however, is to take a helicopter tour and see it all from above. From a helicopter tour, you can appreciate the sweeping valleys and rugged, verdant mountains.
  • Go for a swim: Whether you prefer to surf or snorkel, scuba dive or wade, the only way to truly experience the richness of Hawaii’s bio-diverse waters is to see them for yourself. There are countless ways that you can take a dip into Hawaii’s unique aquatic environments, regardless of your own swimming capabilities.
  • Sample Kona coffee: The Kona region is known for its coffee plantations and vibrant coffee culture—here, you can sample and taste some of the world’s finest beans. Hawaii may be known for its laidback culture, but the Islands certainly aren’t afraid of a little bit of high-octane, locally grown caffeine.
  • Take a fishing charter: There are fewer activities that sum up the greatest elements Hawaii has to offer quite as succinctly as going charter fishing in Hawaii. Joining a fishing charter is an excellent way to learn more about the bio-diversity of the Islands’ rich waters, sample some of the world’s finest seafood and participate in a fun, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
